Rica Mendes, LIVESTRONG Leader 2010, 2011
Rica Mendes first learned what cancer was when she was a young child in the hallways of Stamford Hospital in 1978. When asked by a nurse if she knew what "cancer" was, she responded, "My cousin is one!" mistaking what her grandmother, Margarete Wasser, was battling for her cousin's zodiac sign. Not long after, Rica learned that cancer was a killer when it took her Gramma away.
While Rica's involvement with LIVESTRONG started with a bet betwen two cycling buddies, it has evolved into fundraising, event planning, support networking and a devotion to the cause and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Since then, Rica has joined the only club she never dreamed she would. In July of 2011, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, on her own personal fight against cancer, she rallies others to her side to fight cancer with her as she battles one-on-one.
